Plea against Places of Worship Act

Why is it in news?
  • The Supreme Court asked the government to respond to a plea challenging a special law 'Places of Worship Act 1991' enacted by the then government.
Details:
  • The Places of Worship Act declared that the character of places of worship-pilgrimage shall be maintained as it was on August 15, 1947
  • Plea claimed that the provisions of the Act are arbitrary, irrational and retrospective.
  • It says the cut-off date bars Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs from approaching courts to “re-claim” their places of worship.
