U.S. will seek to rejoin UNHRC

Why is it in news?
  • The Secretary of State Antony Blinken announce that U.S. will seek re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
Details:
  • The Former President Donald Trump had taken the U.S. out of UNHRC in 2018, saying it was biased against Israel and had members who were human rights abusers.
  • The new administration said U.S. will place human rights at the centre of its foreign policy and therefore seeking to rejoin the Council.
About UNHRC:
  • The Human Rights Council is the main inter-governmental body within the United Nations system responsible for addressing situations of human rights violations.
  • The Council’s mandate is to promote “universal respect for the protection of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all.
  • The UNHRC was established by the UN General Assembly on March 15, 2006 to replace the UN Commission on Human Rights.
