U.K. invites PM Modi to G7 summit
Why is it in news?
- The United Kingdom has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the G7 summit.
- The summit is scheduled to be held in Cornwall from June 11 to 13.
Details:
- This will be the first in-person G7 summit in almost two years.
- Apart from India, Australia and South Korea are also invited to participate in the proceedings of the summit as guest countries.
- Cooperation between the U.K. and India is significant this year as India is a non-permanent member at the UN Security Council, where the United Kingdom will take over the presidency in February.
About the G7 Group:
- The G7 (or Group of Seven) is an organisation made up of the world's seven largest advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
- The G-7 has its roots in the wake of the 1973 oil crisis.
- The group regards itself as "a community of values".
