General Anil Chauhan took over as the nation's second Chief of Defense Staff (CDS).

About

General Anil Chauhan served in a variety of official and operational positions, including that of Director General of Military Operations, after receiving his commission into the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981.

Since the first CDS Gen. Bipin Rawat's passing in a helicopter accident in December 2021, the position of CDS has been vacant for more than nine months.

This is the first time since independence that a retired commander with the rank of three-star Lieutenant General has assumed the position of four-star General.
