Children’s issues should get top priority: Satyarthi

Important Points

There is an alarming increase in child sex abuse digitally and across online-enabled platforms in the country and across the world

The demand for child pornographic material had doubled during the first lockdown.

NCRB data showed that five children were subjected to sexual abuse every five hours and three are subjected to rape.

There is a challenge in providing freedom, better education, and better health to every child.

Slavery of children, trafficking, child prostitution, and online child sexual abuses have increased alarmingly

Issues of children must be brought as a top priority in political discourse

A pending draft bill to tackle child trafficking should be tabled and passed in Parliament.

Around 200 million people have been pushed into chronic poverty globally, and another 40 to 50 million will be pushed into chronic poverty due to the Russia-Ukraine war. The looming crisis is already causing challenges and difficulties for poor and marginal people in low-income countries, be it a food crisis, supply chain break, fuel crisis, or energy crisis.

Kailas Satyarthi called for a collective responsibility to address issues related to children and multiple crises,

There should be a global social protection mechanism and this demand has been initiated as part of the effort led by a group of Nobel laureates from peace and other disciplines and world leaders.

There are low-income countries where children can benefit from these efforts. The perpetual unemployment and poverty cannot be ignored.”
