NITI Aayog’s vision about Nicobar Islands ignores ecological concerns

Why is it in News?
  • National Board for Wildlife de-notifies Galathea Bay sanctuary to build Port and trade zone.
Details:
  • NITI Aayog’s Tourism Vision:
(1) It focusses on Little Andaman.
(2) It sought de-reservation of 200 sq km of pristine forests.
(3) It also sought de-reservation of 140 sq km of Onge Tribal Reserve.
(4) South Bay is proposed to be part of the “Leisure Zone” where a film city, a residential district and a tourism special economic zone are to come up.
(5) West Bay is to be part of West Bay Nature Retreat with theme resorts, underwater resorts, beach hotels and high-end residential villas.
(6) There is a proposal for a mega-shipment port at Galathea Bay on Great Nicobar Island.
  • Galathea Bay:
(1) There are concerns about Leatherback nesting sites in the background of tourism and  port development project in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
(2) It is one of the important coastal and marine biodiversity areas.
(3) It is one of the best-preserved tropical rainforests in the world.
(4) It has endemic species such as Nicobar wild pig, Nicobar tree shrew, the Great Nicobar Crested serpent eagle, and the Nicobar Megapode.
