Protection of Hampi Chariot

Why is it in News?
  • ASI puts up barricade to to protect Hampi Chariot in front of Vijay Vitthala Temple.
Details:
  • Why?
(1) Barricade will prevent touching and climing of the monument.
(2) Hampi chariot is most photographed monument which resulted into touching and climbing.
(3) This has resulted into damage of iconic structure.
  • Hampi:
(1) Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century.
(2) Hampi is situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in the eastern part of central Karnataka.
(3) It is the UNESCO’s world heritage site.
(4) Chariot inside the temple is dedicated to Garuda.
(5) But sculpture of Garuda is missing now.
