Why is it in News?
  • While Supreme Court declined to permit Muharram Processions, Bombay HC allowed the festival.
Details:
  • Judgement:
(1) Supreme Court declined to permit Muharram processions across India on the ground that it cannot pass a general order for the whole country.
(2) It said that a general order might create chaos and end with targeting particular community.
(3) Bombay High Court granted permission for the festival in Mumbai with stringent COVID-19 restrictions.
  • Muharram:
(1) It is the first month of Islamic calendar.
(2) It is one of the four sacred months during when warfare is forbidden.
(3) It is considered as the second holiest month, after Ramaḍān.
(4) It is 10 day festival and Tazia procession – a replica of Imam Hussain’s tomb being carried by mourners on the 10th day.
(5) The battle of Karbala was fought on the 10th day of Muharram.
(6) In this battle, Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad, got martyred.
