Centre seeks to complete Darjeeling drawdown

Why it is in news?

  • The Union government  told the Supreme Court that it wants to withdraw the last four companies of Central paramilitary forces from Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts in West Bengal for deployment in the three poll-bound northeastern States.
  • The government said it had received a recommendation from the Election Commission of India (ECI) for deployment of paramilitary forces in the three northeastern States of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya, in which Assembly elections will be held in February.
  • The ECI has also sought the deployment of 270 companies in Nagaland and 100 companies in Meghalaya. Assembly polls in both the States will be held on February 27.
