Karnataka registers transgender marriage

Why in the news ?

  • Few months after Karnataka approved a policy, the first marriage of a transgender person  was registered in Bengaluru.

  • Transgender rights activist Akkai Padmashali married Vasudev V. on January 20, 2017, nearly four years after the Supreme Court recognised transgender rights.
  • However, it took the couple a year to formalise it. Mr. Vasudev said he had many documents to prepare, and Ms. Padmashali was too busy working on issues to think about the process.
  • The registration was a milestone not only for themselves, but also for many like her, Ms. Padmashali said: “It is a big thing to be  recognised. The government should frame schemes to support transgenders’ marriage.
